Klaviyo Dynamic Segments and Flow Re-entry: Avoid Sending the Wrong Message
Use conditions, consent and re-entry controls to build flows that respond accurately to customer behavior.
A list is not a segment
A list contains profiles that were added or subscribed. A segment is dynamic: profiles enter and leave when their data meets or stops meeting its conditions. Segments are useful for VIP, inactive and behavior-based audiences.
Segment membership does not itself prove marketing consent. Check channel consent before sending and keep operational consultation data separate from promotional subscriptions.
Design conditions from a decision
Start with an actionable question, such as customers who bought twice in 180 days but not in the last 60. Translate it into clear AND and OR conditions, then preview real profiles before launch.
Segments can support one-time campaigns or trigger flows on entry. Direct events such as Placed Order may work better as metric triggers with filters.
Give re-entry a rule
Re-entry controls whether a profile enters once, whenever it requalifies, or after a minimum interval. Welcome flows normally run once, while renewal or replenishment messaging may repeat after a defined period.
Test with a documented profile, review consent and skipped reasons, and pause unwanted welcome flows before importing old contacts.
FAQs
Do segments update instantly? Membership updates close to real time, but large segments can take time to populate.
Will editing a segment trigger everyone? Do not assume so. Review how past profiles and re-entry settings are handled.
